A member of the legume family, rooibos is a shrub with needle-shaped leaves that grows only in South Africa’s Western Cape, among the Cederburg Mountains.

Sometimes called bush tea, ‘redbush’, or South African red tea, rooibos is not a tea and is therefore caffeine-free.

In addition to anti-aging antioxidants, rooibos contains essential minerals, including magnesium, potassium, iron, copper, manganese, fluoride, and zinc. It’s very good for the skeletal and digestive systems and skin regeneration.

The absence of tannins means rooibos won’t interfere with iron absorption or cause headaches. Its antispasmodic properties make it useful for soothing colic and stomach cramps. It’s considered safe for pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as infants. Rooibos is also credited with easing tension, boosting the immune system, and hydrating the body.
